Kafala

The kafala (sponsorship) system is the framework historically used across much of the Gulf to link a migrant worker’s visa and legal residency to a specific employer (the sponsor). Most Gulf states are reforming kafala unevenly; the details of exit permits, sponsorship transfer, and contract mobility vary by country and change over time.
